Research Director: high profile evaluations; work with leading experts; help shape the evaluation offer

This team carries out many of the highest profile, important evaluation pieces around public policy and public services. There is huge breadth, from social care (protecting young, vulnerable people, encouraging the overall development of young people), health care (the anti-drugs policy and associated services, reducing drug-related crime), how to make streets safer, encouraging innovation in business… If you enjoy variety, this role would offer you that in spades. That said, if you have an interest in a particular area, that can be catered for that too. This team experiencing significant growth and this is a new role; as a result, there is much flexibility around the scoping of the specifics.

This work makes a difference to individuals, often the most vulnerable people, and to society as a whole. A true sense of purpose runs through everyone here – they are driven to make a difference to society and there is a genuine enthusiasm for doing that.

Full of incredibly competent and brilliant people, the team boasts people who are objectively seen as experts in their field (methodolgists, behavioural experts, ethnography experts…). You would be working alongside them and able to call on their expertese. They also work alongside external experts – again, people who are widely recognised as leaders in their field including high profile economists and academic experts.

The work evaluates the impact of policy and services in order to inform policy and service development going forward. They are working on some of the largest evaluation programmes spanning process evaluation and how the policy/services were implemented, impact evaluation and what difference they made and economic evaluation in terms of whether they represented value for money.  The evaluation programmes are often highly complex and challenging – very often there are multiple initiatives, audiences and funding streams to be considered. They usually span multi-methodologies, so you would work alongside internal specialists and external experts in order to create the most robust insight which can be trusted to inform future policy and service development.

Evaluation is a booming area for this business and the team is expanding quickly. As such, at this level, you would have the opportunity to help shape the direction of the evaluation offer going forward – it is a very exciting time to join.

For this role, we need to see a genuine interest in evaluation. We are open to evaluation specialists AND people with a broad research background with some evaluation experience. We need to see mixed methods skills; you don’t have to be an expert in qual and quant, there are lots of experts on hand, but you need to be able to understand both in order to “orchestrate” mixed methods programmes.

We need people who can lead both senior clients and teams: motivating and supporting juniors is a hugely important part of the role.

And we need people who can write proposals and pitch. Most of the opportunities are incoming so it is more about responding to briefs and driving organic growth.
