Senior Director: campaign evaluation; public policy challenges; use your comms experience to make a positive difference

This organisation helps the government develop better public policies and services by understanding what works and why, and helps them to build communications, often targeted at diverse and complex audiences, in order to influence decisions and drive behaviour change. The team are motivated by creating work which impacts on people’s lives – in their words, “this work makes a massive difference”. And it’s a great culture: very caring, supportive and friendly. So, if you are looking to use your comms research background in a meaningful way, across a wide range of policy areas, in a nice environment, this may be for you.

This role focuses on the impact and effectiveness of communications on behaviour change in the public sector; campaign evaluation is the core, along with some creative development. This team has a stellar reputation for carrying out comms evaluations for government clients, working across all the key government departments across policy areas including health, justice, education, energy, transport…

This is role leads on leads on 2-4 major clients; the trusted advisor piece is a major part of the role  and would see you having strategic conversations with clients. The work is mainly call-off contracts, so the business is very stable and any additional commercial gain is largely through adding value with existing contracts. You would play a key role in pitching for the framework agreements as they come up, every few years, as part of a team. So, you can really focus on the strategic part of the role, without being concerned about achieving financial targets.

You would be leading a team of 8 with 2 direct reports (at Director and Associate Director level) although this can be flexible depending on the individual. And there is the opportunity to be involved in the overall running of the wider team.

For this role, we need to see experience in comms research; we need someone who has credibility with clients and also other agencies (media, creative etc). Strong quantitative skills are a must, we need someone who is confident technically and has experience beyond off the shelf “plug and play” products. And we need to see practical experience of applying behavioural science to the development of communications research approaches and recommendations. An interest and experience in team leadership would be helpful but not a deal breaker. The client would like someone with a commercial background, rather than a public sector background for this role.

This is a full-time role but the client is open to 4-day weeks.
